TO THE LEFT OF THE LONDON-CALCUTTA HIGHWAY

This a nostalgic journey to… our present; a documentary about a small town in Bulgaria situated to the left of the main world routes, inhabited by descendants of Bulgarians expelled from Aegean Thrace and Macedonia, which nowadays lie outside Bulgaria. The film brings together history and memories, love and envy, camels and buffaloes, broken vocations and pride, shyness and self-confidence, the search for family roots and emigration, a comedy festival and personal tragedies, dolmens and tipis, destruction and creation, romance and reality, essence and insanity, oneness with Mother Earth and alienation, happiness and misery, despair and stoicism.

CITY OF DREAMS

reveals the two faces of one Bulgarian town: the socialism of yesterdays and the pop folk music of today. Built in the 1950s as the symbol of the socialist system and the bright future, Dimitrovgrad has turned into a symbol of the capitalist dream and pop folk. The wind of change swept the older idols only to reinstate new ones. The film is a merciless dissection of the transition period after 1989 told from the point of view of several ordinary families from the town of Dimitrovgrad in southern Bulgaria. 20 years after the onset of democratic changes past and present, nostalgia and luxury coexist in two parallel worlds – in the Club of the Brigadier Movement Participants and the pop folk club.

JACKIE, JOHNNY AND CHARLIE ARE NOT PET DOG NAMES

They have never studied the art of filmmaking. Nevertheless, they are some of the most popular figures of Bulgarian cinema. They are tightly connected to its history. The audiences love them. None of their films contains hidden, though elementary truth. All truth is shown close-up. They had been friends from before they started working together. They are the magnificent three, as if taken from classics: sometimes the three musketeers, sometimes three men in a boat, sometimes three men on the bummel, but mostly, they are three men contra mundum. Jackie Stoev, Johnny Penkov and Charlie Iliev take you for a carousel ride in the fun-fair of their life, where attractions include more past than future, old and new stories, film bits and cuts, anecdotes and a lot of tommy rot, scattered over two centuries and two regimes. At the end one is convinced: if the price of freedom is to look like an idiot, it is not that high.
