The 39th edition of Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival will be held between 23 and 29 September 2021 in the halls of the Festival and Congress Centre – Varna.
The Competition includes 12 feature and 15 short films, while Open Horizons, six more works. Competing for the Golden Rose Award are: IN THE HEART OF THE MACHINE by Martin Makariev (Roseville, Attraction, Wildlings); THE NAKED TRUTH ABOUT ZHIGULI BAND by Victor Bojinov (Heights); A TWISTED WORLD by Marius Kurkinsky (The Diary of a Madman); I DON’T LIKE YOU by Borislav Kostov (Night of Dreams); FISHBONE, dir. Alexander Kossev; HUMBLE, dir. Svetoslav Draganov; GERMAN LESSONS, dir. Pavel G. Vesnakov and JANUARY, dir. Andrey Paounov; FEBRUARY, dir. Kamen Kalev (Eastern Plays, The Island, Face Down) and WOMEN DO CRY, dir. Mina Mileva, Vesela Kazakova (Cat in the Wall) came in Varna after premiering in Cannes in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Aside from the four directorial debuts, the sophomore films are also four.
The fact that two thirds of the feature films in the Competition are either debut or sophomore works does not suggest that their authors are newcomers to film directing. They have acquired vast experience and achievements in documentary and short films as well as in directing very popular TV series. A fierce competition is in store for us.
Organisers: Bulgarian National Film Center Executive Agency, Ministry of Culture, Municipality of Varna.
