Decade of Bulgarian Film
02.02.2011

The top ten movies given the highest rating by the audiences of the Decade of Bulgarian Film prior to the opening of the 15th edition of Sofia International Film Festival (SIFF) at the House of Cinema.

The initiative launched by Art Fest, Bulgarian National Film Center and Culture Programme of Sofia Municipality started with the end of the 14th edition of SIFF to show this country’s best 34 movies made over the last decade at the House of Cinema. Decade of Bulgarian Film was a programme on the sidelines of the SIFF For Students, focused entirely on Bulgarian cinematography in 2010, declared Year of Bulgarian Film! The programme enjoyed success and definitely strong interest among the young viewers. Some of the latter were happy to watch for the first time ever pictures released when they were in their tender years and never shown afterwards. The films were screened on Wednesdays and the audiences were invited to stop behind to discuss the works with the authors. Admission for pupils and students was free.

The attendees at the Decade of Bulgarian Film programme totalled 4 244.

One of the ideas of the organizers, which came to fruition, was coming into direct contact with the audiences: the data and analysis of over 800 filled out questionnaires facilitated the establishment of a community of young cinephiles, the SIFF Club, who already receive on a weekly basis complete and exhaustive programmes of the initiatives and programmes of the House of Cinema and of projects of Art Fest. It was the members of the SIFF Club, who were probably the most active in the voting for the movies of the Decade of Bulgarian Film programme! Each viewer could vote for his or her favourite film via the website of the House of Cinema in the initiative’s section after registration. According to the rules one registered user supporting the initiative could vote for all the films and rate the works, but just once, which ensured the objectivity of the final result.

From September 2010, when the initiative to let audiences vote for the movies was launched, until the end of 2010 hundreds of viewers succeeded in shaping the ultimate rating of their favourite pictures. Here are the top ten movies as follows:
• Eastern Plays by Kamen Kalev (8.78)
• Letter to America by Iglika Triffonova (8.69)
• The Goat by Georgi Djulgerov (8.69)
